Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 7 – 14, 2019
Fred Hatch lives in Lawrenceville and is retired from careers in the insurance business and as a mail carrier. Jonathan Calvis of Alpharetta helps run a family foundation. These two have a standing date on Monday morning. That’s when they climb in Second Helpings Atlanta’s refrigerated truck and head to Whole Foods Brookhaven where they load hundreds of pounds of high-quality donated food. They drive the load—deli, dairy products, baked goods and more—to Good Samaritan Health Center where it is used and distributed to other agencies.
Says Fred, a volunteer since 2015, “There’s something in my Scottish blood that finds it unacceptable to throw out perfectly good food.” Adds Jonathan, who was SHA Volunteer of the Year in 2017, “I enjoy being active and I see the difference Second Helpings Atlanta is making, not just in terms of more pounds rescued, but operationally as well.”
