No one could ever forget Lenny Greenstein. But to ensure that the memory of this vibrant Volunteer never fades, Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA) has established an award and fund in his name. Lenny passed away last summer, surrounded by his family in Atlanta, his adopted hometown. A native of Brooklyn and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Lenny graduated from Georgia Tech and served in the U.S Navy.
Following a long and successful career that spanned business, financial services and publishing, Lenny applied the same zeal to his volunteer work. SHA was the grateful beneficiary of his time and talents, along with The Breman Museum, Temple Sinai, The Temple, Northside Hospital, the Zaban Night Shelter, and other community organizations. And, of course, he cherished his wife, Barbara, his children, his grandchildren and his myriad friends and relatives.
Lenny loved Second Helpings Atlanta. He once told us that rescuing food and delivering it to agencies that distribute it to those in need gave him a reason to wake up each day. He called it the most rewarding volunteer work he had ever done.
To honor this beloved member of the SHA family, we have established The Lenny Award (“The Lenny”). It will be presented each year to a food rescue Volunteer who, like its namesake, has had an outsized impact on our organization. At the 2017 SHA Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, we presented the first Lenny to Colleen Casey, a tireless champion of our cause who juggles eight pickup routes. SHA has also established The Lenny Fund, a way to show occasional appreciation to Volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Lenny Greenstein was a talented and passionate story teller. SHA is honored to help tell his story. The depth of devotion and advocacy he brought to our organization—and to those we serve—will never be forgotten. And we know his example will serve as an inspiration to others.
