Volunteering Benefits People of All Ages

By Joe Labriola, Executive Director, Second Helpings Atlanta

Currently, more than 470 people in the greater Atlanta area make up Second Helpings Atlanta’s growing community of Volunteer Drivers who pick up surplus, perishable food from grocery stores, corporate dining halls, farmers markets, schools and large event venues and deliver it to more than 50 Partner Agencies that feed the hungry.

90 Minute Model

SHA’s Volunteer Drivers are matched with routes throughout Metro Atlanta that allow them to use their personal vehicle to pick up, transport and deliver the food, before returning home or to their place of work in 90 minutes or less. Our 90 Minute Model is one of the unique components of volunteering with SHA that helps provide our volunteers with a high impact, rich volunteer experience without requiring a large investment in time.

Recently, this extensive story about many different benefits of volunteering crossed my desk, and I am eager to share it with you. Even though the AgingInPlace.com article focuses on how seniors can get started, this is an excellent resource for people of all ages who are looking to add volunteer service to their lives.

Getting involved with Second Helpings Atlanta is a great way to volunteer no matter how young or old you are. Volunteering benefits families with young kids, students, civic groups, professionals, and yes, senior citizens.
