Count Your Veggies, and Your Blessings

What did you eat yesterday? What will you fix for dinner tonight? Chances are that readers of this message consume an impressive quantity of fresh fruits and vegetables every day, even if they don’t get the seven recommended servings.

Imagine having virtually no access to fruits and vegetables—no fresh berries in your cereal, no apple slices for the kids, no bright green broccoli or crisp summer corn on your plate. That’s the reality for thousands in the Atlanta metro, and it’s an image that Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA) volunteers work every day to change.

If you’d like to be part of Second Helpings Atlanta’s volunteer drivers, we welcome you with open arms. All it takes is about 90 minutes a month. You’ll join hundreds of others who pick up surplus food from businesses, schools, stores, restaurants and other locations and deliver it to agencies that serve those in need. Last year Second Helpings Atlanta rescued 1.5 million pounds of nutritious food. Instead of filling the landfills, it filled the bellies of deserving folks throughout our community

Second Helpings Atlanta has routes to fit your location, your schedule, your ability to lift and the size of your vehicle. Students, retirees, busy professionals, grandparents—SHA volunteers come in every shape and size!

Make this the summer you share the blessing of fresh, nutritious food with those in need. Want to learn more about driving or donating food or funds? SHA executive director Joe Labriola looks forward to hearing from you at director@secondhelpings.info.
